Online Education, edX, Free Courses, High School

Online education company edX expanding to offer free courses aimed at high school students - Metro - The Boston Globe: "The online-learning collaborative edX, a partnership between Harvard University and MIT, is expanding its reach beyond higher education and will begin offering courses geared toward high school students. Edx plans to unveil its first free classes for younger students Wednesday, when most of the new courses will open for enrollment. The 26 high school courses were created by 14 institutions — including MIT, Georgetown and Rice universities, the University of California Berkeley, Boston University, Wellesley College, and Weston Public High School. The online classes, available to anyone in the world, will cover such subjects as computer science, calculus, geometry, algebra, English, physics, biology, chemistry, Spanish, French, history, statistics, and psychology...."

Using technology against cheating in online education

Using technology to fight cheating in online education - Los Angeles Times: " . . . defeating the ingenuity of computer-savvy students is a huge challenge that has attracted much investment and attention in the last year. The whole system can be corrupted with something as low-tech as a cheat sheet tucked out of camera sight. "Online courses are under scrutiny to show evidence of integrity in ways that face-to-face courses aren't," said Teddi Fishman, director of the International Center for Academic Integrity at Clemson University in South Carolina. William Dornan, chief executive of Phoenix-based Kryterion Inc., which monitors tests for several schools and companies, said technology is up to the task. He contends that his webcam system reduces cheating far below its occurrence in regular lecture halls. "Security is incredibly important," he said. "If it's known you can cheat, that completely dilutes the brand."" (read more at link above)

Report Card on MOOCs (video)

An early report card on MOOCs - WSJ.com: "If the MOOC movement were in college, it would be time for a freshman report card. The assessment: great potential, but still in need of remedial work. MOOCs, or massive open online courses, went mainstream last year, heralded as the next great technological disruption in education. The big idea is that putting lecture videos and interactive course work on the Web will make it possible for top-notch university education to reach more students and allow for different styles of learning. Already, MOOCs have shown they can attract students in huge numbers. The largest provider, Coursera, has drawn five million, and nonprofit provider edX more than 1.3 million. And while the majority are still based in the U.S., their learners come from all over the globe: Among edX's students, 9% came from Africa and 12% from India. . . ."

Professors Are About to Get an Online Education

Georgia Tech's new Internet master's degree in computer science is the future. (source infra)

Andy Kessler: Professors Are About to Get an Online Education - WSJ.com: " . . . Since 1990, the cost of college has increased at four times the rate of inflation. Student loans are clocking in at $1 trillion. Something's got to give. Education is going to change, the question is how and when. Think about it: Today's job market—whether you're designing new drugs, fracking for oil, writing mobile apps or marketing Pop Chips—requires graduates who can think strategically in real time, have strong cognitive skills, see patterns, work in groups and know their way around highly visual virtual environments. This is the same generation that grew up playing online games like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft, but who are almost never asked to use their online skills in any classroom. MOOCs will inevitably come to K-12 education too. Everyone knows great public school teachers. But we also all know the tenured type who has been mailing it in for years. Parents spend sleepless nights trying to rearrange schedules to get out of Mr. Bleh's fourth-period math class. Online education is about taking the "best in class" teachers and scaling them to thousands or millions of students rather than 25-30 at a time. The union-dominated teaching corps can be expected to be just as hostile as college professors to moving K-12 to MOOCs. But a certain financial incentive will exist nonetheless. I noted this in a talk recently at an education conference where the audience was filled with people who create education software and services. . . ."

Offerings in online education

Lots of offerings in online education - SiliconValley.com: "Several up-and-coming companies -- including Udemy, Udacity, Khan Academy, 2U and Coursera -- are offering ways for people to educate themselves online, with many courses geared toward practical knowledge and skills for a fast-changing and often forbidding economic landscape. "This is all part of lifelong learning," said Dennis Yang, president of San Francisco-based Udemy. "People feel they must train endlessly just to stay in the game." Courses at the online schools include basic algebra, computer science and physics, along with skills training for Web development and launching a startup company. Also available are courses on artificial intelligence and how to build a computer language. "Online learning is not new, but what is new is what is possible now with the technology that is available to us," said Clarissa Shen, a vice president with Mountain View-based Udacity. "There is a huge amount of scale and the experience is very rich."" (more at link above)

Digital learning has arrived

Digital learning has arrived for Bay Area students, teachers - Inside Bay Area: " . . . . The latest e-learning experiment of open access, with its explosive potential, has top universities and more than 3 million students jumping aboard. Less than a year old, the online education startup Coursera announced last week it would soon offer more than 300 courses from 62 universities around the world. Most of these massive open online courses -- MOOCs in campus lingo -- have been offered with only a certificate of completion, no credit. That could soon change. This month, the American Council on Education recommended credit for four Coursera undergraduate math and science courses from Duke University, the University of Pennsylvania and UC Irvine. With the urging of Gov. Jerry Brown, California's universities are rolling out similar initiatives with renewed gusto. At the University of California, whose campuses offer more than 2,500 online classes, leaders recently floated the idea of undergraduates taking 10 percent of their courses online. The system's outgoing president, Mark Yudof, said students everywhere should be able to use credits from online courses "from UC's own distinguished faculty" to transfer to a UC campus. . ."

Residential Education and Online Education

Print Media: Residential Education / Digital Media : Online Education | Inside Higher Ed:
  • Online programs will succeed to the extent that they are specialized and targeted at a particular community of practice. I will pay for an online course or an online degree if I am working with the best faculty in my specific field or discipline of interest. The other students in my class are at least as important as the professor, as the online class will help me form my professional networks.
  • The success of residential campus based programs or degrees will largely hinge on the brand quality of the institution. The non-academic experience of campus life, the amenities and physical structures, will also be extremely important.
  • Residential institutions that do not have strong brands or high levels of amenities (the campus experience) will face significant challenges in the coming years. Since branding is somewhat a zero sum game, we will see much more investments in campus amenities (dorms, student unions, residence halls, athletic facilities) in the years to come.
  • Online education that is not specialized and does not appeal to a cohesive community will have a very hard time attracting the tuition dollars necessary to support the costs of running these programs.

Revolution Hits the Universities

How to Save College | The Awl: Your Massively Open Offline College Is Broken " . . . If you want to see what’s driving the imperative to learn without paying for a traditional education, take a look at this chart, originally from a Citi report.

graphs

. . . For all our good will, college in the U.S. has gotten worse for nearly everyone who relies on us. For some students—millions of them—the institutions in which they enroll are more reliable producers of debt than education. This has happened on our watch. The competition from upstart organizations will make things worse for many of us. (I like the experiments we’ve got going at NYU, but I don’t fantasize that we'll be unscathed.) After two decades of watching, though, I also know that that’s how these changes go. No industry has ever organized an orderly sharing of power with newcomers, no matter how interesting or valuable their ideas are, unless under mortal threat. . . . "

Revolution Hits the Universities - NYTimes.com: " . . . there is one big thing happening that leaves me incredibly hopeful about the future, and that is the budding revolution in global online higher education. Nothing has more potential to lift more people out of poverty — by providing them an affordable education to get a job or improve in the job they have. Nothing has more potential to unlock a billion more brains to solve the world’s biggest problems. And nothing has more potential to enable us to reimagine higher education than the massive open online course, or MOOC, platforms that are being developed by the likes of Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and companies like Coursera and Udacity.Last May I wrote about Coursera — co-founded by the Stanford computer scientists Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng — just after it opened. Two weeks ago, I went back out to Palo Alto to check in on them. When I visited last May, about 300,000 people were taking 38 courses taught by Stanford professors and a few other elite universities. Today, they have 2.4 million students, taking 214 courses from 33 universities, including eight international ones. . . . "

Big changes on the Web last year in online education

In 2012, the biggest changes on the Web were in online education, social networks, and the increasing use of smartphones and tablets. | MIT Technology Review: "For all the attention lavished on the Web’s growth on mobile devices this year, one of the most interesting Internet trends is still best experienced on a desktop computer: online education. The rising cost of higher education (the average bachelor’s degree now costsmore than $100,000), combined with increasing access to high-speed Internet service and a desire for more efficient and flexible learning methods, brought new prominence to websites offering free or low-priced courses in everything from programming to literature. Free online code-learning startup Codecademy’seffort to teach novices to code snagged more than 400,000 participants for its weekly lessons in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Harvard and MIT joined forces to create edX, a $60 million nonprofit company that streams free college courses online, while nearly three dozen schools—including Stanford and Princeton—formed their own free online course site, Coursera, which has more than 1.5 million users so far. Udacity, cofounded by Sebastian Thrun, a Google Fellow and former Stanford researcher, started out by offering a single Stanford artificial intelligence class online for free. It has since grown and now offers 19 different free courses, mostly geared toward computer science and math. And Duolingo, a free crowdsourced language-learning startup cocreated by Carnegie Mellon University professor Luis von Ahn, has about 300,000 users per week learning French, Spanish, English, Italian, German, and Portuguese. Perhaps the most ambitious (and highly funded) online education offering unveiled in the last year was the Minerva Project, which raised $25 million from Benchmark Capital for its plan to offer a completely online college education for about $25,000 a year. We’ll have to wait to gauge the Minerva Project’s impact, though: it’s not starting classes until 2015. Despite the initial wave of enthusiasm, it’s not yet clear whether many of these startups or universities will be able to form sustainable business models, or if online classes can really work well on a large scale (many of the students that sign up for classes don’t actually complete them). Fortunately, because they operate on the Web, these education efforts are able to gather lots of data about how their students are learning—potentially useful for tweaking lessons and improving performance. . . ."

Facing the Unknown in Online Learning

Facing the Unknown in Online Learning - Getting Smart by Beth Purcell: "Sometimes it is simply the unknown that leads people to question online learning. However, when they take the time to see first-hand how it works and the many benefits students gain from having engaged parents serving as learning coaches alongside certified teachers, they often become strong supporters.  As online learning grows in popularity and is offered as an option to families in more and more states, we encourage people to ask questions in order to better understand this learning model, just as they do with so many other innovative tools and technologies that are improving lives
in many other ways.

A revolution in digital online learning « Online Learning Update: "A revolution in digital online learning
by Anka Mulder, South China Morning Post - Much of the answer lies in realising the full potential of digital technology and the internet. That’s why, a decade ago, Massachusetts Institute of Technology made all its educational materials available online – for free. About 300 educational institutions have followed since, including Delft University of Technology, where I am secretary general. "
